Fountain University, Osogbo, on Wednesday, held its first induction and oath-taking ceremony for 37 registered nurses that graduated from its Department of Nursing Science with the charge to remember that nursing is not just a profession but a noble calling.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ramota Karim, delivered an inspiring address during the event themed “Advancing the Nursing Profession and Shaping the Future of Nigeria Healthcare.”
Prof. Karim emphasised the university’s commitment to excellence and innovation in healthcare education, stating, “The theme of today’s event aligns with the values we uphold at Fountain University. We are committed to producing healthcare professionals who will excel in their careers and spearhead transformative changes in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.”
Reflecting on the program’s journey, she acknowledged the rigorous accreditation process by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which led to the university achieving full accreditation and increasing its admission quota from 50 to 100 students.
“By Allah’s grace, we achieved full accreditation and doubled our admission quota—an extraordinary feat that underscores our institutional commitment to excellence,” she said.
Prof. Karim celebrated the achievements of the nursing program, stressing the outstanding performances of the pioneer students, with an 86% pass rate for the first batch and a perfect 100% pass rate for the second batch.
In her speech, she detailed ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening the program, including the construction of a purpose-built facility with modern classrooms and expanded spaces. The establishment of an N80 million Health Centre donated by the Women Wing of NASFAT, the university’s proprietor, N10 million allocation for advanced nursing laboratory equipment, and partnerships with leading healthcare institutions for clinical training, among others.
The Vice-chancellor addressing the inductees, expressed, “Nursing is not just a profession but a noble calling. Uphold the values of integrity, compassion, and excellence that Fountain University has instilled in you.”
While acknowledging opportunities for Nigerian nurses abroad, Prof. Karim urged the graduates to prioritize contributing to the nation’s healthcare system saying “Nigeria needs your skills, dedication, and innovation to strengthen its healthcare system,” she concluded.
