The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, established in 1997, annually honors individuals, organizations, or institutions that have made exceptional contributions to defending or promoting press freedom, particularly in challenging and dangerous circumstances. The award, created at the initiative of UNESCO’s Executive Board, is formally presented on May 3, during World Press Freedom Day.
Eligibility:
UNESCO invites Member States, international and regional professional organizations, and NGOs in the field of journalism and freedom of expression to submit up to three candidates for consideration.
