The Borno state government has implemented a new dress code for female Muslim students attending government secondary schools in the state, starting from the first term of the 2023/2024 session.
According to a statement issued by Bukar Mustapha-Umara, the director of the Ministry of Education and School Management, the new dress code requires all female students to wear trousers, a quarter blouse, a head tie, and a himar (a type of head covering) as part of their school uniform. Principals of the schools have been instructed to ensure strict adherence to the dress code.
Mustapha-Umara emphasised that the dress code is mandatory for all Muslim female students in the state’s secondary schools. However, for Christian female students, it is optional. They can choose to either retain their current dress code or adopt the trousers.
This decision aims to provide a standardised and modest dress code for female Muslim students across the state. It is expected to promote equality and inclusivity among students while respecting their religious beliefs.
