The British Council has reinforced its mission to empower Nigerian youth by advancing education and the creative industry, aiming to help young Nigerians build skills and confidence to drive societal change amid ongoing sector challenges.

The commitment was highlighted during the Council’s recent event in Lagos, themed “Amplifying the Voices of the Future.”

Speaking at the event, Chilufya Besa, the British Council’s Country Director, emphasized the importance of education and cultural exchange in empowering Nigeria’s youthful population, with nearly 70% under age 30. “‘Amplifying the Voices of the Future’ resonates with Nigeria’s demographic reality,” Besa said. “Our mission is rooted in education, cultural exchange, and creating opportunities.”

Besa noted the British Council’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those aimed at quality education, gender equality, and reducing inequalities. This commitment comes as Nigeria’s education sector grapples with major obstacles such as limited funding, outdated infrastructure, and a shortage of qualified teachers. These issues severely impact millions of students, with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reporting that over 10 million Nigerian children remain out of school.

In recognition of its 80th anniversary in Nigeria, the British Council has strengthened its support for young Nigerians, particularly in the education and creative sectors. Initiatives like recent assistance to 20 emerging Nigerian filmmakers, whose work now appears at international film festivals, reflect the Council’s commitment to nurturing creative talents. “By amplifying young voices, we support global aspirations for a fairer, more inclusive future,” Besa added.

The Council’s impact extends to partnerships with the Nigerian government and local educational institutions to strengthen Nigeria’s educational system. Simon Field, the UK Deputy Head of Mission, praised the longstanding partnership between the UK and Nigeria, highlighting its foundation of shared values. “By working together, we can overcome challenges and unlock the vast potential within both our nations,” Field remarked.

Through continued investments in education, the arts, and cultural exchange, the British Council aims to address Nigeria’s education challenges, offering Nigerian youth a pathway to leadership and innovation despite the sector’s hurdles.
