Can you tell Edugist a bit about your background?

I am a first-class graduate of Nursing Science from Fountain University and a licensed nurse under the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. My journey in healthcare began at a community health center, where I gained invaluable hands-on experience in treating malaria, providing emergency care, and assisting with labor and delivery. These early experiences solidified my passion for patient care and motivated me to deepen my expertise. Currently, I am expanding my knowledge in maternity care through my clinical posting at Adeoyo Maternity Hospital, where I actively participate in antenatal and postnatal care, labor management, and neonatal care.

Beyond my career in nursing, I have a strong passion for creativity and entrepreneurship. I create video content that educates and inspires, leveraging digital platforms to share knowledge and insights. Additionally, I work as a sales manager at Fanbase Collective, where I apply my organizational and leadership skills. My entrepreneurial journey is also taking shape with the launch of my ready-to-wear clothing brand, Unchoked Fits, which merges fashion with comfort and affordability.

What motivated you to aim for a first-class degree? Was this a goal from the beginning, or did it develop over time?

My motivation was deeply rooted in my desire to excel academically and make my family proud. At the beginning of my university journey, I didn’t set out specifically to graduate with a first-class degree. However, as I progressed, I discovered my potential and realized that I could achieve more than I initially imagined. Seeing my hard work translate into excellent grades pushed me to set higher standards for myself. The encouragement from my family, lecturers, and mentors played a huge role in shaping my mindset. Over time, I became intentional about maintaining academic excellence, which required discipline, perseverance, and strategic learning techniques.

Did you face any personal challenges while studying? How did you overcome them?

Yes, I encountered several challenges while studying. Balancing the rigorous demands of nursing school with personal responsibilities was one of the toughest aspects. There were moments when academic pressure felt overwhelming, but I managed these challenges by staying focused and surrounding myself with a strong support system of family and friends. I also leaned on prayer and a positive mindset to navigate difficult times. Whenever I faced setbacks, I reminded myself of my long-term goals and used them as motivation to keep pushing forward.

How did you structure your study routine to achieve consistent academic success?

I followed a well-structured study routine that prioritized both efficiency and comprehension. I created a detailed timetable to allocate specific time slots for studying, revising, and practicing questions. Rather than relying on rote memorization, I focused on understanding concepts thoroughly. Breaking down complex topics into smaller, manageable sections helped me retain information more effectively. I also made it a habit to review my notes daily and participate in group discussions, which reinforced my learning and provided new perspectives on difficult topics.

What study techniques or strategies worked best for you while studying?

Active recall and spaced repetition were two of my most effective study techniques. I used flashcards to test my knowledge and consistently revisited key concepts to reinforce retention. Teaching others also proved to be a powerful learning tool—it not only deepened my understanding but also highlighted areas where I needed improvement. Additionally, I incorporated visual aids such as diagrams, flowcharts, and mind maps to simplify complex subjects, making it easier to grasp and remember information.

Were there any specific subjects or courses that you found particularly difficult? How did you tackle them?

Pharmacology was one of the most challenging courses due to the vast amount of information on drug classifications, mechanisms of action, and side effects. To tackle this, I broke the subject into smaller study sessions, focusing on one category of drugs at a time. I created mnemonic devices and acronyms to aid memory retention and regularly engaged in study groups where we quizzed each other. I also made use of online resources and consulted my lecturers whenever I needed clarification.

What initially drew you to pursue a career in medicine?

My interest in healthcare was inspired by the selfless dedication of nurses and doctors in my community. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand how healthcare professionals made a difference in people’s lives, often providing care and comfort during their most vulnerable moments. This exposure fueled my passion for the field and instilled in me a deep desire to contribute to saving lives and improving healthcare outcomes.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing the healthcare industry in Nigeria today?

Nigeria’s healthcare sector faces several critical challenges, including inadequate funding, brain drain, poor infrastructure, and limited access to quality healthcare, especially in rural areas. Many hospitals lack modern equipment, and healthcare professionals often work under difficult conditions with insufficient resources. The ongoing migration of skilled healthcare workers to other countries further exacerbates the shortage of professionals in Nigeria. Addressing these issues requires substantial investment in healthcare infrastructure, improved working conditions for medical personnel, and policies that prioritize the well-being of both patients and healthcare providers.

What is your advice to young Nigerians aiming to tread the same path as yours?

My advice is to stay focused on your goals and remain resilient despite the challenges that may arise. Academic excellence requires dedication, consistency, and smart study techniques, so develop a study routine that works for you. Seek knowledge beyond the classroom by engaging in research, mentorship programs, and professional networking. Surround yourself with supportive people who motivate you to do better, and most importantly, believe in your abilities. Success is achievable when you remain determined and proactive in your pursuit of excellence.

How did you prepare for exams and handle the pressure of deadlines and assessments?

I prepared for exams by starting early and developing a study schedule that covered all necessary topics. I relied on past questions to identify patterns and key areas of focus. To manage exam stress, I practiced mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, took short breaks during study sessions, and maintained a balanced diet to stay mentally and physically energized. Time management played a crucial role in ensuring I met deadlines without feeling overwhelmed.

What role did your lecturers and university resources (libraries, academic support, etc.) play in your success?

My lecturers were instrumental in my academic journey, offering guidance and simplifying difficult concepts. They provided valuable insights that helped me understand the practical applications of what I was learning. The university library was also a key resource, granting me access to textbooks, journals, and research materials that deepened my understanding.

Additionally, academic support programs helped me refine my study techniques and prepare for exams effectively.

How did you manage to balance academics with social life and extracurricular activities?

Time management was the key to maintaining balance. I allocated specific hours for studying while ensuring that I also set aside time for relaxation and social interactions. I carefully selected extracurricular activities that aligned with my interests and personal growth, allowing me to participate meaningfully without overwhelming my schedule. By setting priorities and maintaining discipline, I was able to enjoy a well-rounded university experience.

Now that you’ve graduated with a first-class degree, what are your plans for the future?

My immediate goal is to gain more practical experience in clinical settings, particularly in maternity care. In the long term, I aspire to specialize further in nursing and contribute to healthcare policy reforms that improve maternal and child health services. I also plan to expand my clothing brand, Unchoked Fits, and explore opportunities in healthcare advocacy to raise awareness on critical health issues.

How has your academic achievement shaped your career aspirations? Do you feel more doors have opened for you?

Graduating with a first-class degree has significantly boosted my confidence and credibility. It has provided me with opportunities for advanced studies, leadership roles, and mentorship positions. I’ve also been able to connect with professionals and organizations that align with my career goals. This achievement has reinforced my drive to pursue meaningful projects that create lasting impact in the healthcare sector.

What career opportunities are you most excited about, and how do you plan on leveraging your degree?

I am particularly excited about opportunities in maternity and public health nursing. I intend to leverage my degree to contribute to improving maternal and child healthcare services, advocating for better healthcare policies, and participating in community health initiatives. Through continuous learning and practical experience, I hope to play a key role in transforming healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
