The Executive Council of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved N995 million for the purchase of over 1,000 laptops for senior secondary schools.
This decision, reached at the FCTA’s 10th Executive Council (EXCO) meeting, aims to prepare students for key exams such as WAEC, NECO, and JAMB by shifting toward a digital learning environment.
Dr. Danlami Hayyo, the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Education Secretariat, announced the initiative while briefing newsmen after the council meeting, which was presided over by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Hayyo emphasized the importance of adapting to digital education methods to better equip students for a technologically advancing world.
“The Executive Council of the Federal Capital Territory Administration has approved the procurement and distribution of over 1,000 laptops to senior secondary schools,” he stated. “FCT schools will now transform into the digital education system; we will now move from normal teaching and learning classroom to media education system of learning.”
Highlighting the significance of the shift, Hayyo added that it was high time students embraced digital learning and that teachers adopted digital teaching skills to replace manual methods.
The new laptops will enable schools to implement a “media education system” that goes beyond traditional classroom teaching.
In addition to advancing digital education, the FCT Executive Council approved the distribution of 250 metric tonnes of assorted fertilizers to local farmers, aiming to support food production for the upcoming dry season. The fertilizers, comprising NPK, Urea, and liquid fertilizer, will be distributed across the six area councils in the FCT.
The Mandate Secretary for the FCT Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat (ARDS), Lawan Geidam, confirmed the distribution plan, underscoring the council’s commitment to agricultural productivity. The decision aims to support local farmers and increase food security across the region.
The council meeting, which featured the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, and other high-ranking officials, reflects a significant step toward enhancing both educational and agricultural resources in the FCT.
