The Association of Practising Women Engineers in Nigeria has warned that female engineers remain scarce in Nigeria and urged parents, guardians, and governments to promote engineering as a viable profession for female children.
The chairperson of the Calabar Chapter, Justina John Ulafor, delivered this message during a workshop titled “She Engineer and Digitalisation.” She highlighted the concerning lack of female engineers in the country and emphasised the association’s efforts to raise awareness and attract young girls to consider engineering as a career path.
Ulafor also mentioned their initiatives to support female students in secondary schools through STEM exams and encourage them to pursue science and engineering. For those already in the engineering field, the association offers mentorship programs and capacity building in entrepreneurship to empower them further.
Faith Edu, the incoming chairman, echoed the association’s mission, stressing their commitment to inspiring young girls to pursue engineering and challenging prevailing stereotypes.
The event also featured scholarship awards and recognition to celebrate and encourage female excellence in the engineering profession.
