Federal Government Girls College, Abuloma, Port Harcourt has emerged as the winners of the maiden edition of the Education Champions League quiz competition, organised by August Meeting, a group desirous of bringing back the reading culture to the youths of Rivers State.
Four secondary schools in Rivers State shared the N19 million prize money in the first edition of the ECL quiz competition.
FGGC picked the top prize of N10 million, after scoring 27 points in the finals, with the quartet of Ogbonna Joy, Nwokeji Superior,
Ebere Oroma Lee and Wehere Excel, who represented FGGC, emerging young millionaires, as they are entitled to 50 per cent of the prize money.
Seacrest Preparatory School, Port Harcourt, was the first runner-up
24 points got N5 million, while Aladumo International School and Enitonia High School, Port Harcourt, second and third runners-up with 23 and 16 respectively carted home N2.5 million and N1.54 million.
Sixteen public and private secondary schools in the state participated in the competition, which began on September 21, 2024. Eight of the schools qualified for the semi-final while four emerged finalists.
Speaking at the finals of the competition, the chief sponsor of the competition, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, lauded the August Meeting for organising the ECL quiz competition.
Lulu-Briggs said, “It becomes imperative individuals and the government should begin to appreciate the need to take with all seriousness the education of the next generation of Nigerians. The government has no greater responsibility than to educate the next generation of Nigerians.”
Expressing her delight in the triumph of her school as the maiden champion of the ECL quiz competition, the principal of FGGC, Abuloma, Mrs Dorathy Ukachukwu expressed gratitude to God Almighty, without who the feat would not have been impossible.
She said, “I am elated and delighted that my girls emerged tops in this competition. Preparing the girls was not an easy task, but we thank God who crowned our efforts with this resounding success.
“We are not going to rest on our oars, but continue to work harder to remain tops in subsequent editions of this competition.
Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Wenenda Wali expressed the August Meeting’s appreciation to the sponsor of the prizes, pledging the organisers’ resolve to make the next edition of the completion bigger than the maiden edition.
He announced that 50 per cent I the prize money goes to the students who represented their various schools, while 25 per cent goes to the management of the schools and the remaining 25 per cent is used to purchase books for the schools.
The highlight of the event was the announcement of 50 per cent increment in the prize money for the next edition of the ECL quiz competition by Chief Lulu-Briggs.
