Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has banned the practice of engaging students in manual labour within and outside school premises, following a surprise visit to the School for Arabic Studies in Kano.
The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, revealing that Yusuf was visibly displeased when he found students digging a toilet pipeline during his unscheduled visit. Shocked by the scene, the governor immediately confronted the headmaster, questioning why students were assigned such physically demanding tasks instead of focusing on their studies.
In response, the headmaster attempted to justify the act, explaining that the work was carried out after school hours. However, Yusuf was firm in his stance, declaring an immediate ban on such practices.
“Schools are institutions for education and moral guidance, not for manual labour,” the governor stated. “It is unacceptable for students to be subjected to such tasks when they should be focusing on their studies.”
To prevent a recurrence, Yusuf directed that all school infrastructure and maintenance projects be submitted to the Ministry of Education or his office for proper execution. He also reassured the school management of his administration’s commitment to renovating all dilapidated structures, including the school’s mosque.
The governor’s move underscores his dedication to improving educational standards in Kano, ensuring that students receive quality education without being burdened with physical labour.
