Samuel Badekale, the best graduating student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has captivated the public with his response to speculations about his facial appearance being attributed to excessive reading.
In a detailed recount of his academic journey, Samuel debunked the misconception and showcased his remarkable achievements beyond academics.
“That’s how my eyes have always been since birth,” he clarified. “It isn’t due to excessive reading or burning midnight candles. I hardly do overnight, and I sleep well.”
Samuel, who graduated as a leading light, highlighted his active involvement in initiatives aimed at positively impacting his community.
In 2022, he co-founded @smaunilag, a platform created alongside dedicated colleagues to raise awareness about mental health among students. The initiative partnered with the UNILAG Counselling Unit to organize impactful awareness programs.
His accomplishments extend to hosting the first-ever @TEDXIdiAraba event, providing a platform for the Idi Araba community to share stories of resilience and innovation.
Samuel’s leadership was also evident in sports and publication. As the coach of his level football team, he led them to victory in the HOD Cup and the Departmental All-Star Cup.
He further demonstrated his editorial skills as the Chief Editor of the yearbook Bioscope, a publication dormant for six years. Under his leadership, the team raised 50% of the required production budget through sponsorship.
Balancing these activities with academics, Samuel remained deeply rooted in his faith. He served as the Teens and Children President turned teacher at RCCG Place of His Presence and was Head of Department (HOD) for Bible Study at LP65 Junior Church for six years.
Reflecting on his journey, Samuel emphasized, “All of this I handled with academics. So I didn’t just ‘read’ in UNILAG.”
Samuel’s story has inspired many, proving that excellence in academics can be harmonized with impactful extracurricular and community-building initiatives.
