Excerpts

Can you share the origin story of the Uyilaw School Fees Support Fund and what inspired you to start this initiative?

I was raised by a single mother, who despite her modest income as a civil servant did her best to give my brothers and I the best education she could afford. As hard as she worked and with the numerous sacrifices she made for us, I still saw firsthand how difficult it was for her and that is what inspired the Uyilaw School Fees support project.

What specific challenges do single parents, especially single mothers, face when it comes to providing education and essential resources for their families?

Paying fees! Oh, you cannot imagine how much of a headache it is for them, buying school books and supplies and feeding. The cost of living has skyrocketed and it’s really a miracle how a lot of them get by.

Could you tell us about some of the impactful stories of the 27 incredible women and 35 children who have already received support from your fund?

They were humbling experiences. Many of these mum’s were uncertain where the funds for the fees of their children would come from. After our phone call, I recall one mother breaking down in tears and telling us how she intended to end it as she thought God had forsaken her. I recall another mother crying due to the fact that the school withheld her child’s West Africa Seninor Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) result because they were unable to pay the school fees. Another woman, a widow, had no one to turn to, incapacitated and without a job, they just stayed put waiting for a miracle. I must say, there was a humbling story with every mother.

What kind of assistance and resources does the Uyilaw School Fees Support Fund provide to single mothers and their children?

The project only provides school fees support. And in some instances we also provide school kits such as bags, books and stationeries.

Some of the Beneficiaries of the Uyilaw Initiative

How do you select the beneficiaries for your fund, and what criteria are taken into consideration?

We announce and people apply. We have a selection team whose job is to go through the applications and shortlist beneficiaries. We then put calls across to potential beneficiaries to understand their individual challenges or stories. Your application must prove that you are unable to pay the fees. The intention is not to subsidise those who can afford it, no, it is to help those who cannot afford to pay these fees.

Can you describe some of the long-term goals and vision you have for this initiative in terms of supporting single mothers and children?

As I said earlier, I was raised by a single mother and it was a struggle growing up. However, my life is a testimony. I have turned out to be an excellent professional, father and mentor. It is my vision that through this project, more young lives will be impacted positively. Education is really important and it will help these children to have a shot at life and grow to become more Uyilaws and even greater, as well as more nation builders and impact makers.

What advice would you give to other single mothers who are facing similar challenges in providing quality education and resources for their families?

Yes. I know the struggle may be hard right now, but keep pushing to make your children’s life better. It may not look like it, but believe me, they’ll never forget your love and sacrifice for them. Trust in God. Look unto him and he will never forsake you.

How can individuals and communities get involved or contribute to the Uyilaw School Fees Support Fund’s mission?

During each cycle, we welcome people who choose to be part of the project to support this project either financially or with other resources to enable us to reach more single mothers out there. We have a long waiting list. We received almost 100 applications, but we were only able to help 27. Contribution from individuals and communities will help us reach more single mothers out there.

What impact do you hope to see in the lives of single parents and their children as a result of your continued efforts and the growth of this initiative?

It is our hope that they smile, get a breather and know they are not alone in the journey of raising their children. And in the long run, it is our hope that they get to see their children grow to meet their earnest expectations and contribute meaningfully to nation building.
