Jigawa State Government has concluded plans to establish an agency for the training of teachers and the development of education managers. The Commissioner for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Prof Isa Yusuf, said this, yesterday, at a cluster training for English Language, Mathematics and Science teachers in Dutse.
This was as the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWSUBEB) shortlisted 1,811 applicants for employment. Press Secretary to KWSUBEB, AminatAtere, stated, yesterday, in Ilorin that the shortlist was from the 55,713 applicants from across the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ‘Cluster Training for Effective Teaching of English, Mathematics and Sciences: A Strategy for Improving Students’ Outcomes’ was conducted for selected teachers across the state. Yusuf said the state government had already inaugurated a committee that would facilitate the smooth establishment of the agency.
The commissioner added that the agency would be responsible for organising capacity-building training for teachers and other educational management stakeholders in the state.
“The agency will be responsible for conducting a series of training for teachers throughout the year. It will be headed by an expert in educational management and competent resource persons will be engaged to train our teachers, even in Information and Communication Technology (ICT),” he said.
Noting that the gesture aimed at ensuring that teachers in the state were to enhance students’ outcomes, the commissioner assured the participants that the state government accorded high priority to the welfare and development of teachers through its vibrant policies and programmes.
According to him, one measure taken to achieve the desired goals is the ongoing renovation works on staff rooms and offices, including those of principals and directors of senior secondary schools across the state.
THE shortlist includes 1,500 teachers, mostly from Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, and 311 non-teaching staff comprising drivers, security guards and office assistants for schools in the 16 local councils of the state.
“Successful applicants with valid phone numbers have since been contacted for their letters. Documentation started on Monday, January 6, with successful applicants from Kwara North. Tuesday, January 7, is for new hires from Kwara South, while Wednesday, January 8, is for successful candidates from Kwara Central,” the statement added.
Atere quoted the KWSUBEB Chairman, Prof. SheuAdaramaja, as saying that the process focused more on hiring persons who would stay in their place of assignment. “This underscores why the board sought nominations of competent and qualified hands from rural communities to bridge the manpower need in the hinterlands.”
