Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has clarified the purpose of the University of Nigerian Languages, Aba (Establishment, etc) bill, 2024. The bill seeks to upgrade the National Institute for Nigerian Languages (NINLAN), Aba, Abia State to a University of Nigerian Languages, not to bear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s name.
Kalu emphasized this during a courtesy visit from NINLAN’s Governing Board, led by Professor Victor Ukaogo. He explained that the upgrade aims to enable NINLAN to receive funding from TETFUND, expand its curriculum, and contribute more to society.
The bill, sponsored by Kalu and eight others, focuses on elevating NINLAN’s status, not renaming it after the President. Kalu stressed that President Tinubu is unaware of the bill and should not be dragged into petty issues.
Kalu highlighted NINLAN’s potential to create jobs and serve the people. He noted that it’s not a new university but an upgrade to benefit from TETFUND and become a reference point.
Preserving Nigerian languages is crucial, as they unite the nation. Kalu suggested amending the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) act to fund specialized institutions and inter-university centers.
NINLAN’s unique focus on Nigerian languages sets it apart. Kalu emphasized the importance of language in daily life, from markets to worship centers. He urged prioritizing language education to prevent extinction.
