A team of students from Lagos State University (LASU) emerged victorious in the 2025 Lead City Voices Intervarsity Debate Competition, held on Thursday at Adeline Hall, Lead City University, Ibadan.
The LASU team, comprising Abdulquadri Ajeniyi, Sunday Saheed, and Adedeji Aderounmu, secured first place in the prestigious public speaking competition. Lead City University’s representatives claimed second place, while students from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) finished third.
The debate saw participation from twelve universities, with five advancing to the semi-finals before the final three were selected. Contestants were evaluated by a three-member panel of judges on content, logic, persuasiveness, presentation, time management, and attire.
For their outstanding performance, the LASU team was awarded a cash prize of ₦500,000.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of Lead City University, Professor Kabiru Adeyemo, emphasized the institution’s commitment to nurturing public speaking skills among university students. He highlighted the competition’s role in fostering innovation, societal impact, and academic excellence.
“This competition is not just about winning; it is an avenue for students to build friendships and enhance their intellectual and social skills,” he said.
Similarly, the President of Lead City Voices, Iretunde Adewusi, described the debate as an annual event designed to sharpen students’ public speaking abilities and promote intellectual discourse.
With LASU’s impressive performance, the competition has once again reinforced the importance of public speaking as a tool for academic and professional success.
