The role of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff has historically been one of the most critical and challenging positions, often held by individuals during times of profound national security challenges. Following the death of the chief of staff on November 5, Nigeria has once again mourned another influential figure on the post. This makes it third Chief of Army Staff to have died in the office

Here are the ex-COAS who died in office:

At just 30 years old, Akahan was appointed Army Chief in 1967, a critical period shortly before the Nigerian Civil War erupted. His tenure was marked by intense military challenges as Nigeria faced internal conflict. Akahan’s leadership contributed to early military strategies during the civil war, although his time in the role was cut short due to his untimely death in 1968. He died on his way back to Maiduguri after visiting the frontlines in Nsukka, he returned to his hometown in Gboko for a brief rest. His helicopter crashed and two pilots also lost their lives in the tragic incident

Appointed in January 2021, Attahiru replaced Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai during an era with significant security concerns, including Boko Haram insurgency and banditry. Attahiru’s service was brief due to his tragic death in a plane crash in May 2021, leaving a legacy of commitment and resilience. This plane crash claimed the life of Attahiru and 10 members of his entourage .

Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja

Recently appointed on June 19, 2023, Lagbaja currently served as the Chief of Army Staff and passed away on November 4, 2024. He played pivotal roles in numerous internal security operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States.
