Maltina Teacher of the Year 2023 Competition Opens today: Who will be the next champion?

The submission of entries for the 9th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year competition commenced today, Thursday, May 25 2023. The overall winner will receive a total cash prize of 6.5 million Naira, a trophy and a capacity development training opportunity.

The submission of entries for the 9th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year competition commenced today, Thursday, May 25 2023.

This prestigious event, aimed at recognizing and celebrating secondary school teachers’ exceptional efforts and dedication, will yet again shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes of education.

The competition, which is organized by Nigerian Breweries Felix-Ohiewerei Foundation (NB-FOETF), is open to teachers in public and private secondary schools in Nigeria. 

According to the organisers entries are open from Thursday, May 25 to Friday, July 21, 2023.

The overall winner will receive a total cash prize of 6.5 million Naira, while first and second runner-ups will receive 1.5million Naira and 1.25million Naira respectively.

The Company’s Secretary/Legal Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Uaboi Agbebaku during his presentation at the flag-off ceremony held at the Nigerian Breweries office in Iganmu, Lagos State, spoke on the role teachers play in helping their students achieve their dreams.

Uaboi said the competition was aimed at rewarding the efforts of teachers and motivating them to continuously make a positive impact. He added that this year’s edition was sponsored in partnership with AirPeace and Stanbic IBTC.

“As you may already know, this is the 9th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition, but unlike the previous editions where the Nigeria Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund was the sole sponsor, we are delighted to announce that this year, we have commenced opening up potential partnerships with reputable and progressive companies who share in our vision and mission for the initiatives” Agbebaku added. 

During her presentation, the Corporate Affairs Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mrs Sade Morgan, urged all secondary teachers in both public and private schools to participate in the 9th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year competition. 

She highlighted the competition’s immense impact on teachers, as it has ignited a newfound passion and commitment to exceptional teaching among educators.

“There is no doubt that this competition has done a lot to lift the spirit of Nigerian teachers. In the last eight years, we have succeeded in providing a new narrative for the teaching profession in Nigeria. Our teachers are now proud to be associated with teaching, and we are encouraging the next generation of teachers to be passionate about the profession,” she said.

She noted that in the last eight years, the Maltina Teacher Of The Year Competition has emerged as a catalyst to global recognition with many of its champions recording noteworthy strides in the global space. She said the MTOTY champions have been exceptional and continued to distinguish themselves in the education sector.

Speaking on the prizes, she disclosed that the overall winner for the 2023 edition would receive a total cash prize of 6.5 million Naira, a trophy and a capacity development training opportunity. He added that the winner’s school would receive either a computer laboratory or a block of classrooms. 

“The first runner-up of the competition will receive a total sum of 1,500,000 Naira, a trophy, while the second runner-up receives a total of 1,250,000 Naira and a trophy. All state champions will be rewarded with recognition plaques and a cash prize of 500,000 Naira each”, she added.

She also lauded the state governments for the kind of support they have shown to the initiative.

Representatives of the corporate partners (Air Peace and Stanbic IBTC) and key sector players (Nigerian Union of Teachers,  Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, and All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools) present at the flag-off ceremony also leveraged the platform to laud the initiative and invite teachers to participate in the competition.

Speaking at the event, the Head of Corporate Communications, Air Peace, Mr. Stanley Olisa, said they are delighted to partner with Nigerian Breweries Plc on this laudable initiative to reward and celebrate teachers to achieve better impact in the classrooms. He further pledged the commitment of Air Peace to continue to support the Maltina Teacher of the Year competition

Also, the representative of Stanbic IBTC Bank, the Head, Consumer Sector/Client Coverage, Mrs. Nnenna Okoro commended Nigerian Breweries and the Felix Ohiwerei Foundation for remaining committed to the initiative, and this is one of the ways through which the bank continues to celebrate and promote the noble profession of teaching. 

In his remarks, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), who was represented by Mrs. Manu Adebola, said: “The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) is thrilled to be part of this esteemed ceremony that the Nigerian Breweries has organized for the past nine years. 

“Since its inception in 2015, the Maltina Teacher of the Year Award has benefitted approximately 210 exceptional secondary school teachers who underwent rigorous selection processes. It is worth noting that this competition, initially limited to teachers in public secondary schools in Nigeria, has now expanded to include teachers from private schools across the nation. This expansion has elevated the competition’s level of competitiveness and selection criteria. Such a development is indeed praiseworthy.”

Another sector player at the event was the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), represented by Mr. Masheyi Olushola, ANCOPPS Lagos President. Olushola said the Maltina Teachers Award is one initiative that has encouraged and motivated teachers to give their best to the profession. He urged principals to nominate their teachers for this competition. 

To participate, teachers should log on to www.maltinateacheroftheyear.com to complete the entry form online. Alternatively, they can download the form, complete it, scan it, and email the completed form to maltinateacheroftheyear@heineken.com.
