The Ondo State government and the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Ondo State Branch convened at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) for the presentation of the book “Tales and Voices: Anthology in Honour of Basorun Seinde Arogbofa.”
The event celebrated Arogbofa’s immense contributions to education and literature, drawing a crowd of eminent figures from traditional, political, and academic circles.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Olaiya Adelami, led the chorus of accolades, honoring Arogbofa as a “pillar of literary excellence.”
He emphasized that Arogbofa’s contributions have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s literary landscape.
“His writings have consistently projected values of integrity, knowledge, and cultural heritage that resonate with the ethos of our people,” he stated, underscoring Arogbofa’s far-reaching influence not just in writing, but also in national development.
The anthology, a collection of essays, poems, and reflections on Arogbofa’s life, was described by Aiyedatiwa as a testament to his commitment to nurturing young minds and fostering creativity, inspiring generations of writers.
He commended the Ondo State Branch of ANA for organizing the event, calling it a fitting tribute to a man dedicated to advancing literature and education in Nigeria.
“We must celebrate our national icons like Arogbofa during their lifetimes, acknowledging their contributions for future generations,” the Governor remarked, encouraging young writers to draw inspiration from Arogbofa’s legacy.
Professor Busuyi Mekusi, a prominent academic who reviewed the anthology, highlighted Arogbofa’s significant contributions to the Nigerian literary canon.
He described Arogbofa as “kind-hearted, meek, selfless, inspiring, and supportive,” noting that the anthology’s pieces reflect the personality of this octogenarian literary giant. He recommended the 229-page book for its emotional depth and inspirational quality.
FUTA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, praised Arogbofa as a “beacon of knowledge” whose works have profoundly influenced intellectual discourse in Nigeria.
She underscored the importance of celebrating individuals like Arogbofa, whose lifelong dedication to writing and mentorship has inspired countless young minds.
“The anthology is a fitting tribute, and I encourage students and academics to draw inspiration from Arogbofa’s life,” she added.
In a call to action for the literary community, Mr. Sunday Afolayan, Chairman of ANA Ondo State, urged for increased sponsorship and support to promote literature at the grassroots level, encouraging parents to foster a culture of writing and reading among their children.
Professor Bayo Aborisade, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, expressed his privilege in organizing the event, noting Arogbofa’s exceptional contributions to the literary community and his role in mentoring young writers.
In his heartfelt response, Basorun Arogbofa expressed gratitude for the honor, thanking ANA and the Ondo State Government for their steadfast support. He urged the government to ensure that the literary works of local authors are recognized and read, encouraging writers to remain optimistic about overcoming the nation’s challenges.
Reflecting on the founding of ANA in Ondo State, Arogbofa shared that his inspiration came from literary giants like Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka. He reaffirmed his commitment to mentoring young writers and promoting the development of literature in Nigeria.
The ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Adeniyi Adegbomire; Afenifere Leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti; and representatives from the Ondo State Commissioner of Education and the Olubaka of Oka Kingdom, all uniting to honor a titan of Nigerian literature.
