Nigeria’s leading financial service provider, OPay, has awarded N12 million in scholarships to 40 promising students at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
Each student will receive N300,000, a sum designed to ease financial pressures and encourage students to focus on their academic pursuits.
The scholarship award ceremony, held at ABU’s Vice-Chancellor’s office, marked a momentous occasion both for the students and for OPay. In attendance was Mr. Dauda Gotring, Managing Director of OPay and a proud alumnus of ABU, who expressed deep pride in supporting the institution that shaped his life.
“ABU holds a special place in my life, and I’m thrilled to give back to students here who show such promise and determination,” Gotring shared, highlighting the personal significance of the scholarship initiative.
ABU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the contribution, noting the meaningful impact the scholarships will have on students’ lives.
“This support from OPay will lift a heavy burden off our students, helping them focus on their dreams and academic goals. We are incredibly grateful to OPay for their generosity and partnership,” said Prof. Bala, underscoring the value of corporate support in advancing education.
OPay’s initiative doesn’t end at ABU. In a broader commitment to Nigerian education, the company plans to provide scholarships for 400 students annually, including those from other prestigious institutions like the University of Ibadan and Nnamdi Azikiwe University. With a commitment of N120 million each year, OPay is aiming to support Nigerian students and equip them to thrive in their academic and future professional endeavors.
Moreover, OPay is expanding its impact beyond scholarships. The organization is exploring initiatives focused on empowering women in Zaria through entrepreneurship programs, startup support, and skills training, demonstrating a holistic approach to uplifting communities and fostering economic growth.
