In a moment of pride for Nigeria, His Royal Highness, Alakinyele of Akinyele, Oba James Oluyemi Odeniran, the Chairman of the Oyo State Football Association, has been conferred with an Honourary Doctorate Degree in Community Development by the International Peace and Conflict Management University (IPCMI), Kingdom of Flourishland, Australia.

The recognition, bestowed on December 26, 2024, highlights Odeniran’s lifelong dedication to grassroots initiatives and youth empowerment.

The prestigious honour was granted through a special approval by the university’s Board of Trustees and Directors, in collaboration with Women’s Effect Initiative International. The university’s selection process identifies and celebrates individuals worldwide whose contributions have left a significant impact on their communities. “The award recognises Oba Odeniran’s extraordinary contributions to community development and his unwavering dedication to empowering young people,” a statement from IPCMI noted.

Oba Odeniran, a former FIFA badge referee and respected member of the Referee’s Appointment Committee, has been instrumental in fostering inclusive communities and driving positive change. His efforts in youth development have shaped the lives of countless individuals across Nigeria, aligning seamlessly with the vision of IPCMI to honour those who exemplify commitment to social justice and inspire the next generation.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Odeniran expressed heartfelt gratitude to IPCMI, Women’s Effect Initiative International, the university’s Board of Trustees, and the entire academic community for the recognition. “This honour is not a celebration but a call to action,” he stated. “It challenges me to do more for my community and my nation.” He dedicated the award to the collective efforts of the Oyo FA, the Akinyele community, the government, and others who have supported his initiatives.

The former Chairman of the Nigeria Referee Council reaffirmed his commitment to building a brighter future for Nigeria’s youth and urged collaborative efforts to ensure every young person has the opportunity to realize their dreams. “By working together, we can transform Nigeria into a country where everyone can contribute meaningfully to its progress,” he added.

The ceremony, held with grandeur, was attended by a host of eminent personalities, including members of the Council of Obas, traditional chiefs, representatives of the Oyo FA, Nigeria Referee Association members, and other dignitaries. Notable attendees included Gboyega Makinde, the immediate past General Manager of Oyo State Sports Council, captains of industry, and a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly representing Akinyele Local Government.
