The Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has reaffirmed its commitment to oversee the judicious utilisation of funds allocated to the agency.
During the inaugural meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, Chairman of the committee, Muntari Dandutse, expressed the committee’s determination to ensure that TETFund operates efficiently, transparently, and effectively to maximise its impact on Nigeria’s higher education system.
Dandutse, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Katsina State, emphasised the critical role of tertiary institutions in shaping the country’s future.
He stressed the need for unwavering support to these institutions as they mold future leaders, innovators, and professionals.
TETFund, with its mandate to provide intervention funds to these institutions, plays a pivotal role in advancing education, research, and infrastructural development.
The committee aims to secure resources for infrastructure improvements in tertiary institutions, noting the presence of other potential donors and agencies in addition to TETFund.
In a statement, Dandutse outlined the committee’s forthcoming activities, stating that they will engage with experts, stakeholders, and the voices of the people they serve.
Their diligent work will involve drafting legislation, proposing policies, and overseeing resource allocation to address the challenges faced by tertiary institutions and TETFund.
Simon Mwadkwon, the senate minority leader representing Plateau State, acknowledged the existing issues and agitations in tertiary institutions but assured that the committee would work towards enhancing the education system.
He emphasised the need for action to propel the education system forward.
Neda Imasuen, a legislator from Edo State representing the Labour Party (LP), drew attention to the deteriorating state of the education system and called for collective efforts to address the decay. Furthermore, she underscored the importance of addressing the adverse effects of hard drugs on the youth in various educational institutions.
The senate committee’s determination to ensure the effective use of TETFund resources and enhance the education system signals a strong commitment to advancing Nigeria’s higher education sector and fostering the development of future leaders and innovators.
