The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended three suspects in connection with the violent assault on members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, February 23, disrupted the students’ journey to Abuja for their annual convention.
Confirming the arrests on Tuesday in Akure, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, stated that the command swiftly responded after receiving a distress call from one of the students. “Intelligence gathered revealed that this was not the first time NANS members had been targeted in the same community,” Odunlami disclosed. She further noted that through intelligence-led policing, a special squad successfully tracked and arrested three suspects linked to the incident.
Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, assured the public of a thorough investigation to expose the full circumstances behind the attack and bring all perpetrators to justice. “The three suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and will be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation,” Odunlami stated.
The PPRO emphasized the command’s commitment to protecting all residents and travelers in the state. She also urged the public to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
In response to the swift police action, the NANS delegation, led by Comrade Owolewa Taiwo, the Zonal Coordinator for the South-West, expressed appreciation to the Commissioner of Police. Taiwo also reaffirmed NANS’ commitment to collaborating with law enforcement to combat crime in Ondo State.
