The University of Ilorin Students’ Union has announced an upward revision of transportation fares on campus. The new rates are set to take effect from Monday, October 28, 2024, reflecting the latest increase in fuel prices from ₦930 to between ₦1,200 and ₦1,500 per litre.
According to their Press Release Today, Oct. 23, 2024. The new fare breakdown is as follows:
– PS to Tanke: ₦400 (up from ₦300)
– PS to Challenge/Post Office (Bus): ₦600 (up from ₦500)
– PS to Challenge/Post Office (Car): ₦700 (up from ₦600)
The Students’ Union emphasized that this adjustment is necessary to maintain reliable and affordable transport services for students and staff, while balancing the economic challenges posed by the rising cost of operations.
“This unavoidable adjustment… reflects the growing cost of operations and aims to maintain reliable transport services in the University Community,” the Union noted in their official statement.
Recognizing the potential financial strain this might impose on students, the Union assured that discussions with the Kwara State Government are ongoing to explore possible solutions, including the introduction of more affordable Marco-polo buses for campus routes.
The Union added, “Our goal is to ease the financial burden on our colleagues while ensuring convenient and reliable transport services remain accessible.”
The Students’ Union also urged passengers not to exceed the newly agreed fares, assuring that fare reductions will be considered once the economic situation stabilizes.
