In the wee hours of the morning, a sense of anticipation and excitement gripped the hearts of many Nigerians as the highly anticipated second season of the ‘The Return of the Giant: South West Edition’ kicked off. The initiative, aimed at discovering young literary talents akin to Wole Soyinka, began auditions across 15 centers in Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Osogbo, and Ekiti. The event, organized by passionate individuals, faced financial hurdles but continued its mission undeterred.

Last year’s extensive search spanned 32 local governments, but this year, the auditions were limited due to funding constraints, leaving the organizers hopeful yet challenged. The event’s founder, whose sleepless night was filled with a mix of emotions, expressed the critical need for support and prayers to sustain this vital initiative.

An Ongoing Struggle: The State of Education in Nigeria

In a poignant reflection on the sorry state of education in Nigeria, the founder lamented the deplorable conditions prevalent in the nation’s academic landscape. Expressing concern over the disproportionate rewards in entertainment compared to academic achievements, the founder, Stella Ebuetse questioned the fate of brilliant children whose potential was overshadowed by the allure of immoral reality shows.

The Vision for Change: A Revolution in Academic Competitions

Undeterred by the challenges, the visionary behind ‘The Return of the Giant’ remains resolute in the pursuit of revolutionising academic competitions. Emphasizing the importance of engaging youths intellectually and rewarding them appropriately, the founder envisioned a future where academic champions would be celebrated with substantial prizes, recognition from the highest offices in the land, and opportunities beyond national borders.

Amidst the despairing state of education, this initiative stands as a beacon of hope, reminding Nigerians that the youth possess immense potential waiting to be nurtured and recognized. As auditions continue, the nation watches with bated breath, hoping that this effort will spark a transformative change in the educational landscape, paving the way for a brighter future for Nigeria’s youth.
