In the pursuit of higher education in Nigeria, students often encounter various preparatory programs designed to help bridge the gap between secondary school and university. Among these, the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) stands out as a significant pathway for students aiming to secure direct entry admission into Nigerian universities. Established to create an alternative to A-Levels, JUPEB offers students a one-year intensive programme that not only builds academic skills but also provides an alternative route to bypass the challenges associated with the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Do you wish to write JUPEB, here are some facts about JUPEB that you should know:

1. JUPEB was established in 2013 by a consortium of leading Nigerian universities, led by the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

2. It aims to provide a seamless pathway for students to gain direct entry into 200-level undergraduate programs across Nigerian universities.

3. After completing the JUPEB programme, students receive a certificate that is recognised by many universities in Nigeria and a few institutions internationally.

4. The JUPEB programme spans approximately one academic year (about 10 months)

5. Students typically choose three subjects relevant to their desired university course, similar to A-Level subjects.

6. Grading follows a point-based system, with each subject graded on a scale from A to F, contributing to an overall cumulative point average (CGPA) used for university admissions.

7. Over 40 Nigerian universities accept JUPEB certificates, including institutions like the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), and the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

8. Successful JUPEB students gain admission directly into the 200 level of their chosen university programs, bypassing the first year.

9. JUPEB is open to candidates who have completed secondary education and possess at least five O-Level credits in subjects relevant to their intended course.

10. Although JUPEB has no strict age limit, candidates are typically expected to meet the minimum university age requirement.

11. Prospective students apply through affiliated universities or JUPEB centres, undergo screening, and pay fees, which vary by institution.

12. JUPEB provides an alternative for students who may face challenges with the UTME or wish to avoid the competitive nature of the JAMB examination.

13.  JUPEB’s curriculum is targeted, covering only three core subjects, allowing students to concentrate and prepare effectively for their desired courses.

14. Statistics show that a significant percentage of JUPEB graduates succeed in securing direct entry admission to Nigerian universities.

15. Exams are conducted in each of the chosen subjects, with assessments divided into two semesters. Continuous assessments are also part of the grading. JUPEB uses a scoring system where each grade carries a certain number of points; achieving 13 points or more significantly increases a student’s admission prospects.
