A fatal road accident on Monday afternoon claimed the lives of six students of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) and their shuttle bus driver when an articulated vehicle lost control and rammed into their bus in Felele, Lokoja.
According to eyewitness accounts, the accident occurred around 2:30 PM. The ill-fated shuttle bus was reportedly about to convey students to the university when the trailer, which was transporting wood and jerrycans of palm oil toward Abuja, suddenly lost control and crashed into it. The impact crushed the bus, leaving motorists and passengers on the highway stranded.
Officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) promptly arrived at the scene to assist in rescuing those trapped under the wreckage. The State Sector Commandant of the FRSC, Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, who led the rescue operation, confirmed the incident but said he could not immediately provide an official casualty figure.
However, he disclosed that injured victims had been rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja and the Kogi State Specialist Hospital for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased had been deposited in hospital morgues for identification.
This tragic accident adds to the rising cases of road crashes across Nigeria, raising concerns over road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent further loss of lives.
