The Benin Republic chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students has assured Nigerian students in the neighbouring country that the recent suspension of accreditation of degree certificates from the country only affects institutions lacking accreditation.

The NANS President in Benin Republic, Ikenna Favour, made the clarification in a statement on January 2, 2024.

The Federal Ministry of Education on Tuesday following an investigative report expressed concern over the adoption of deceptive means by some Nigerians to obtain degrees from Benin Republic and Togo to secure jobs, and therefore ordered the immediate suspension of accreditation of the degrees obtained from tertiary institutions in both countries.

But assuring Nigerian students of accredited institutions in both countries, Mr Ikenna’s said, “We want to clarify that this suspension of accreditation is specific to certain institutions in Benin Republic and does not apply to accredited institutions in Benin.

“Nigerian students studying in Benin Republic should rest assured that their degrees and education are recognised by the Nigerian government. The quality of education provided by the accredited institutions in Benin Republic remains unquestioned.

“We understand the worries and uncertainties this situation may have caused but we want to assure you that your degrees obtained from accredited institutions in Benin are valid and respected. We encourage all Nigerian students in Benin Republic to remain focused on their studies and not let this issue hinder their educational pursuits.

“NANS-RB is actively working to provide support and guidance to Nigerian students in Benin Republic. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep you informed of any updates or resolutions related to the accreditation suspension,” he further assured.
