The Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, has received approval from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to introduce 16 new academic programmes, further solidifying its status as a leading institution in technical and vocational education.

Announcing the development during the Polytechnic’s 2024 Nine Lessons and Carols Festival, the Rector, Professor Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri, revealed that the approved programmes include both National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) courses. He described the approval as a major milestone that will enhance the institution’s capacity to produce graduates with the skills and expertise needed to meet national and global demands.

“The newly approved National Diploma programmes span fields such as Food Science and Technology, Environmental Science and Management Technology, Glass and Ceramics Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Mechatronics Engineering Technology, Metallurgical Engineering Technology, Photography, and Multimedia Technology,” Ufuophu-Biri said.

He added that the Higher National Diploma programmes would include Science Laboratory Technology (Microbiology/Biochemistry option), Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence), Computer Science (Cyber Security and Data Protection), Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology (Control and Instrumentation), Mechanical Engineering Technology, and Welding Engineering Technology.

With these additions, the Polytechnic now offers 46 academic courses, a significant expansion that positions it as a hub for training professionals across key disciplines. Ufuophu-Biri expressed his gratitude to Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori for his unwavering support in advancing education in the state.

“The Governor’s commitment to education has been instrumental in creating an enabling environment for institutions like ours to thrive. His support has allowed us to grow, innovate, and offer students access to world-class learning opportunities,” Ufuophu-Biri stated.

He also commended the Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerovwo Tonukari, and the State House Committee on Education, led by Chief Charles Emetulu, for their relentless efforts to promote educational development. According to Ufuophu-Biri, their collective support has positively impacted the Polytechnic’s academic environment, enabling remarkable achievements in scientific research and innovation.

Highlighting one such achievement, the Rector mentioned the development of a fuel-less generator by the Polytechnic, describing it as a product of “symbiotic mechanistic operation.” He called it a testament to the institution’s commitment to sustainable technological advancements and cutting-edge research.

The Rector also acknowledged the dedication of the Polytechnic’s management, staff, and students, crediting their hard work for maintaining the institution’s reputation for excellence. “With the introduction of these new programmes, we are confident in our ability to produce skilled professionals who will meaningfully contribute to the development of the state, country, and beyond,” he said.

As Delta State Polytechnic Otefe-Oghara continues to expand its academic offerings, it is poised to meet the growing demand for specialized knowledge, particularly in technology-driven fields. Backed by a forward-thinking leadership and strong state support, the Polytechnic is positioning itself as a leader in technical education, ready to equip students with the tools to succeed in an increasingly competitive world.
