Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti (EKSU), has urged Governor Biodun Oyebanji to increase its monthly subvention from N410 million, stating that the amount is insufficient to cover its N810 million wage bill.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babalola Ayodele, made the appeal in Ado-Ekiti during a media briefing ahead of the university’s 29th convocation ceremony. He emphasized the need for more funding to develop key faculties, including Pharmacy, Law, and Laboratory Science.
“With the implementation of the new minimum wage, our wage bill is N820 million, while the government’s subvention remains N410 million,” Ayodele said. “We are appealing to the governor to assist the university by increasing the subvention to enable us to enhance human capacity and drive the state’s development.”
The VC also revealed that 37 staff members had faced disciplinary actions, including dismissal, suspension, or temporary bans from holding leadership positions due to offenses such as sexual misconduct and abandonment of duty.
Meanwhile, the university will confer honorary doctorate degrees on Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Chairman Dr. Zacch Adedeji, and Bank of Industry (BoI) Board Chairman Mansur Muhtar. Bamidele, in a statement through his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs, expressed gratitude for the recognition, describing it as a challenge to further his commitment to public service. He pledged to use his position to promote the rule of law, advocate for pro-people legislation, and contribute to collective peace and prosperity.
