The Morgan Smart Development Foundation (MSDF) has announced that it has provided educational support to over 180 underprivileged students in the past 15 years.

This announcement was made by Dr Omawumi Atsiangbe-Urhobo, Founder and President of the foundation, during a scholarship presentation ceremony held in Warri.

Eighteen students from Warri and its surrounding areas were awarded scholarships at the event.

Atsiangbe-Urhobo, also the founder of Omalyne Edu-Trust, stated that the foundation’s vision is to create a lasting legacy for future generations by assisting underprivileged students in accessing quality education. This vision was inspired by a close friend who recognised her passion for this cause.

The scholarship programme, temporarily suspended four years ago due to a lack of funding, has been re-established with an initial endowment of N5 million through the Omawumi Evelyn Atsiangbe-Urhobo
Education Trust Fund.

Atsiangbe-Urhobo plans to further support the fund through proceeds from her autobiography and additional fundraising efforts.

“These students were nominated by principals from schools in Warri and its environs, following a rigorous selection process that included exams and interviews,” Atsiangbe-Urhobo explained.
“Although we initially planned to support 12 students, the challenging circumstances faced by many applicants led us to increase the number to 18.”

The scholarship covers comprehensive school-related expenses, including books, uniforms, school bags, and fees, amounting to N25,000 per student yearly. These items will be provided directly to the students, with payments made to the schools.
In addition to the scholarships, MSDE recognised 10 former students for their academic excellence, leadership, and entrepreneurial spirit.

“Between 2010 and 2020, MSDF supported 180 students, many of whom have gone on to excel in fields such as engineering, medicine, architecture, and education,” Atsiangbe-Urhobo said. “These students are a testament to the fact that one’s background does not determine their future success.”

Atsiangbe-Urhobo concluded by expressing her gratitude to the school principals, teachers, family, friends, and partners who have contributed to MSDF’s mission of providing educational opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
