Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has committed more than N2 billion to upgrading the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) and addressing accommodation shortages by constructing student hostels.
This investment was announced during a Town Hall meeting themed “Governance Issues: The Journey So Far,” where the governor engaged with the Students’ Union leadership of the state.
Governor Mbah emphasized his administration’s focus on transforming education at all levels, from primary schools to tertiary institutions. “At ESUTH alone, we have committed over N2 billion to enhance its infrastructure,” Mbah said, highlighting the state’s commitment to improving both education and healthcare.
In addition to the hospital upgrades, the governor outlined plans to build 17 Smart Green Secondary Schools by 2025, part of a broader initiative that includes 245 out of 260 planned Smart Green Schools for nursery and junior secondary school students. He stressed the importance of education, noting, *“We’ve dedicated one-third of our total budget for two consecutive years to education because we understand that education shapes the future of a nation. This isn’t about me—it’s about the next generation and those yet to be born.”*
Mbah also revealed efforts to modernize the education system by introducing innovation and experiential learning programs at the tertiary level, as well as building Smart Schools for primary and secondary students. He reassured residents that the contractors overseeing these projects are being closely monitored to ensure they meet strict timelines and deliver the state’s vision for advanced learning environments.
The governor also promised that by September 2025, every child in Enugu State would be learning in a Smart School. *“We’ve already trained 11,000 Smart School teachers and Directors of Experiential Learning to prepare for this transformation,”* Mbah said.
Mbah emphasized that the investments in education are not just about immediate results but about securing a better future for the state’s children. “Everything we’ve done is to provide our children with the best learning environment and access to technological tools that prepare them for a competitive world,” he stated, reaffirming his administration’s long-term commitment to the future of Enugu State.
