Former politician Senator Shehu Sani has highlighted the alarming consequences of widespread insecurity in the Northern region of Nigeria
Sanni revealed this at the 15th Ralph Opara Memorial Lecture on Girl Child Education, held at the Arewa House Kaduna,
According to Sani, more than ten thousand schools have been forced to close their doors, amplifying the existing educational crisis in the region.
During the event organized by the National Association of Seadogs, Pyrate Confraternity(NAS/PC), Senator Sani attributed the surge in insecurity to the neglect of nomadic communities’ education.
He expressed concern that the lack of educational opportunities for these communities has fueled banditry and terrorism, with many young individuals in their 20s and 30s resorting to violence.
Sani emphasized, “If we had provided them the education they need, they wouldn’t have carried arms and be attacking people.”
Urging immediate action, he called upon the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize education, security, and investment in agriculture as fundamental solutions to the escalating crisis.
The former senator underscored the pivotal role education plays in addressing the root causes of insecurity, emphasizing that neglecting the education of nomadic populations contributes significantly to the security challenges faced in the North. Sani’s impassioned plea stressed the urgency of addressing the education crisis to mitigate the rise in violence and promote lasting stability in the region.
