It has been revealed that four federal universities in Nigeria, namely the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Benin, and the University of Lagos, have set their minimum benchmark for admissions at 200 cumulative scores obtained during the Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examinations (UTME).
Before the 2023 policy meeting conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), all institutions were instructed to propose their respective cut-off marks for admission. According to the information obtained by a PUNCH correspondent in Abuja, seven institutions have indicated that their minimum admission benchmark scores would be 200 and above, with four of them being federal universities.
During the policy meeting, the Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian universities unanimously agreed upon 140 as the minimum benchmark for the admissions of the 2023/2024 academic session. However, individual universities have the freedom to determine their own cut-off marks. Nevertheless, no university will be allowed to admit any candidate who scored below the 140 benchmark, as emphasized by JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede.
In the case of polytechnics, the minimum benchmark score for admissions was set at 100, while Colleges of Education adopted the same benchmark of 100 for their admissions criteria.
