The Lagos State University Directorate of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship (DSDE) hosted an engaging orientation programme for its new students.

The programme which was held on Tuesday April 30th, 2024, at the Buba Marwa Auditorium on the main campus in Ojo, Lagos, was aimed at empowering the fresh batch of full-time students with entrepreneurial acumen.

The event, aimed at introducing incoming students to the array of entrepreneurship offerings within the university, was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Prof. Omotunde Boyo.

Olatunji-Bello emphasised the importance of honing entrepreneurial skills for economic empowerment, urging students to embrace the available opportunities for skill development and business exploration.

Addressing the gathering, Acting Director of DSDE, Habeeb Sanni, PhD, who was represented by Deputy Director Francis Dansu, highlighted the imperative role of universities in steering towards producing job creators rather than job seekers amidst economic challenges.

The DSDE, he explained, is committed to nurturing students’ entrepreneurial ideas, offering a diverse range of skills training from Event Planning to Bag Making and Makeup Artistry, among others.

A notable highlight of the programme was the insightful address by Guest Speaker, Engr Olubayo Akinwunmi, CEO/Managing Director of Sedav Projects and Construction Services Limited. Engr Akinwunmi illuminated the essence of entrepreneurship, encouraging students to identify their passions, develop requisite skills, and aim for significance in life beyond mere survival.

Throughout the orientation, students received practical guidance on how to register for skill options and were introduced to corporate engagement, with the National Sales Manager of FCMB, Friday Nwokolo, making an impactful gesture.

Two students who engaged actively during the guest speaker’s session were named brand ambassadors of FCMB at LASU and were surprised with a financial boost of twenty thousand naira each deposited into their newly opened FCMB accounts.
