In honour of World Braille Day, the Lagos State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) organized a literacy competition for visually impaired students at Pacelli School for the Blind and Partially Sighted, Surulere.
The initiative, led by the Directorate of Physically Challenged under Barr. Temitope Akinremi, aimed to raise awareness of Braille as a critical tool for communication and education.
The contest featured Basic 5 pupils who impressed attendees with their exceptional reading and writing skills. Mayokun Sanusi emerged as the winner and was rewarded with a brand-new typewriter.
Noah Lawal, the first runner-up, received a Braille slate, while Pelumi David, the second runner-up, took home a collapsible mobility stick. All other participants were presented with consolation prizes.
Representing the State Chairman, Engr. Adigun Ibrahim Olalekan, MNSE, his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Damilola Kushimo, praised the program’s inclusivity. “This initiative showcases our administration’s commitment to empowering youths across Lagos, irrespective of their background. We will continue to drive progress and inclusion for all,” Engr. Adigun affirmed.
The event saw the presence of key dignitaries, including Leader Odulana, Leader Oreshile, Leader Rashidat, and Comrade Tope Ajenifuja, the Coordinator of NYCN Surulere Local Branch. They motivated the students and applauded the Adigun-led administration for fostering such impactful programs.
Barr. Akinremi highlighted the significance of the event, stating, “World Braille Day underscores the importance of accessibility in education. This competition is a step toward building confidence and providing opportunities for visually impaired students.”
This impactful event not only celebrated the talents of visually impaired students but also reinforced the need for creating equal opportunities for all individuals to succeed.
