Every student has a story of how a teacher made a difference in their life. These stories highlight the deep and often unacknowledged influence teachers have on individuals and society. Consider the story of Aanu Olanrewaju, a young girl from a small rural town in Nigeria. Her family was financially struggling, and she had little hope of continuing her education and paying for her WAEC. Her civic education teacher, Mr. Adu, recognised her potential and provided her with extra lessons after school and gathered money for her exam with the help of other teachers. Even after she got into a higher institution, Mr. Adu kept in touch with her and provided her with financial support regularly. Today, Aanu is a successful lawyer, attributing much of her success to the teacher who saw her potential and believed in her. This is just one example of the countless ways teachers change lives.

It is time that society recognises the immense contribution teachers make to nation-building. While there are days such as World Teachers’ Day, which is set aside to celebrate teachers, there is a need for a more sustained effort to appreciate and support the work they do. A teacher is more than just someone who imparts knowledge; they inspire, nurture creativity, and foster critical thinking. Teachers don’t just teach; they prepare students for life. They shape individuals who go on to influence the world in their respective fields, thus contributing indirectly to economic growth, innovation, and societal development. Every doctor, lawyer, scientist, artist, and engineer owes their success, in part, to a teacher who guided them through their formative years.

The most apparent role of a teacher is to pass on knowledge. However, it’s not simply about delivering facts or figures. Teachers facilitate learning by engaging students, stimulating curiosity, and encouraging questions. They don’t just feed students information but help them develop the skills necessary to think critically and solve problems. Through their teaching methods, they transform classrooms into spaces where ideas flourish and students become equipped to deal with the complexities of the modern world.

Teachers have a unique opportunity to mould future leaders. From the early years of education to the final years of higher learning, teachers help develop the qualities that produce strong, ethical, and responsible individuals. They teach more than academics; they teach values such as honesty, integrity, respect, and perseverance. Through their guidance, students learn the importance of teamwork, empathy, and resilience, all essential traits for leadership in any capacity.

In addition, teachers often serve as role models for their students. For many young people, a teacher is the first adult outside of their family with whom they have a deep and meaningful relationship. The behaviour, attitudes, and values demonstrated by a teacher can leave a lasting impression on a child’s character and outlook on life. Teachers who exhibit passion, kindness, and commitment to learning inspire their students to do the same.

Nation-building isn’t just about infrastructure, governance, or economic policies; it’s about developing people who are capable of contributing meaningfully to the growth and progress of a nation. Teachers are instrumental in this process. They lay the foundation for the next generation of professionals, innovators, and leaders who will carry the nation forward.

Despite their immense contribution, teachers often do not receive the recognition or support they deserve. In many parts of the world, teachers face challenging working conditions, including overcrowded classrooms, limited resources, and low pay. In some cases, they are also subjected to disrespect and undervaluation by society. It is essential to change this narrative.

Teachers need better working conditions to perform their roles effectively. This includes adequate resources, manageable class sizes, and access to professional development opportunities. Governments and education policymakers must invest in education systems that support teachers, providing them with the tools they need to succeed.

One of the most effective ways to show appreciation for teachers is by ensuring they are adequately compensated for their work. In many countries, teachers are among the lowest-paid professionals, despite the importance of their work. Improving teacher salaries is one way to ensure that teaching is seen as a respected and valued profession. Competitive compensation also attracts talented individuals to the profession, ensuring that students receive high-quality education from skilled and dedicated teachers.

Public recognition plays a significant role in valuing the contribution of teachers. Celebrating teachers through national awards, media recognition, and community appreciation events helps elevate the status of the teaching profession. These forms of recognition show teachers that their work is valued and appreciated, motivating them to continue making a difference in the lives of their students.

Recognising the contribution of teachers is not just about celebrating their hard work; it’s about understanding that without them, no society can truly thrive. They are, after all, the silent architects of progress.
