Dosumu Olamilekan Emmanuel, a 25 years old from Obafemi Owode LGA, Ogun State. I have a national diploma in transport planning and management from the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro. I graduated with distinction. I recently graduated from Lagos State University, where I earned a degree in Transport Management and Operations. I graduated as the best student in my faculty, setting a new record CGPA of 4.70/5.0. I am also a graphic designer. I have worked with various brands such as SlumArt, Streams of Joy International, Impactiverse Consult Ltd. , Lamata, etc.

What inspired you to pursue a degree in Transport?

My passion for transport management was inspired by both personal experience and academic curiosity. After losing my sister to a road accident, I became deeply interested in how transport systems can be made safer and more efficient. This tragedy, combined with my desire to improve road safety, access to public transport, and logistics systems, solidified my commitment to the field.

Can you describe your undergraduate experience?

My undergraduate experience was both challenging and rewarding. From the onset, I had a clear goal to make the most of my time in school by learning all I could about transport management. I actively participated in academic and leadership roles, and I became the president of my faculty, leading several initiatives and projects. I also had opportunities to intern at reputable organizations like LAMATA, where I worked on data analysis in the Intelligent Transport Systems department. These experiences enriched my understanding of the industry and helped me achieve my academic goals.

Were there any courses that you found especially difficult?

Yes, engineering drawings (MEE) and MTH 251 were particularly challenging for me. Understanding the technical details in these subjects required a lot of extra effort, and I spent additional time seeking help from peers and other academics materials to fully grasp the concepts.

Did you frequently use the library for studying?
Yes, the library was an essential part of my academic success. I frequently used the faculty library to study, especially for courses that were more demanding. The quiet environment and access to resources helped me focus and stay ahead in my coursework.

What significant challenges did you face during your studies?

One of the major challenges I faced was balancing academics with leadership responsibilities. As the president of my faculty, I had to manage several projects and represent my peers, which sometimes clashed with my study schedule. Another challenge was dealing with the emotional toll of losing my sister and the financial difficulties my family faced. Despite these setbacks, I remained focused and worked hard to excel.

Did you participate in any internships during your studies?

Yes, My internship was at LAMATA, a prestigious transport parastatal in Lagos, where I worked in the Intelligent Transport Systems department, contributing as a data analyst and collaborating with transport specialists on various projects.

Did you receive any scholarships for your studies?

Yes, I was fortunate to earn several academic awards based on merit and leadership. I received the 2022 LASU Scholarships award (a tuition free session), and I was also awarded 100,000 naira as the Best Graduating Student of my faculty. These financial awards helped alleviate some of the financial challenges I faced and provided additional motivation to excel.

Do you plan to pursue any additional professional certifications in your field?
Yes, I have already earned two professional certifications—I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration (CIOTA). I am also looking forward to pursuing more certifications in supply chain management to enhance my expertise and career prospects.

In what ways do you think your interdisciplinary background sets you apart from other professionals?

My interdisciplinary background in transport management, logistics, and operations gives me a unique perspective on how these areas intersect. Having worked on both theoretical research and practical projects, I understand how to approach problems from multiple angles. This holistic understanding enables me to develop more innovative and effective solutions to complex transport and logistics challenges.

Has any lecturer contributed to your ease of navigating your academics?

Yes, several lecturers contributed to my success, but one, in particular, stood out—my project supervisor- Mrs Christy Bisiriyu. Her guidance and support during my undergraduate thesis on the safety of school children in accessing public transport were invaluable. She encouraged me to push boundaries and think critically, which greatly contributed to my academic development.

Do you have any role model you admire?

Yes, I admire Damilola Olokesusi, the cofounder and CEO of Shuttlers. Her innovation in the transport industry, particularly in improving urban mobility through technology and sustainability, is incredibly inspiring. She has paved the way for more efficient and accessible transport solutions in Nigeria, and her leadership motivates me to strive for similar impact in my own career.

What are your long-term career aspirations?
My long-term goal is to one day become the Minister of Transport of Nigeria. I want to lead initiatives that improve transport infrastructure and policies, making it easier for people and goods to move efficiently across the country. This ambition is fueled by my desire to create a safer and more efficient transport system that benefits all Nigerians.

How do you plan to apply your knowledge to address real-world challenges?

I plan to apply my knowledge by focusing on real-world problems such as road safety, traffic congestion, and logistics inefficiencies. My academic research and internships have equipped me with a solid foundation in understanding these issues, and I aim to use data-driven solutions and technology to address them. My goal is to make transport systems safer and more efficient, which will have a direct positive impact on people’s daily lives.

What are your plans following the completion of your bachelor’s degree?

After completing my bachelor’s degree, I plan to pursue further studies, specifically a PhD in Supply Chain Management. I have already begun applying to programs in the United States. I am also considering gaining more practical experience in the industry through internships or entry-level positions, to bridge the gap between academic research and practical applications.
