Segun Abiodun, the proprietor of Young Leaders Nursery and Primary School in Ilorin, urged teachers to embrace online training as a means to enhance their professional skills. Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Abiodun emphasized the importance of continuous learning for educators to improve their productivity and effectiveness in the classroom.
Abiodun highlighted a concerning trend among teachers, noting that many have been overly reliant on physical training sessions organized by governments or non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
He stated, “Teachers should not wait for the government or NGOs to organise trainings before they explore the online opportunities.”
He encouraged teachers to take initiative and invest in their own professional development, saying, “They should add value to themselves and upgrade their knowledge to meet global standards. When they have the digital skills, they will reflect on the students.” This focus on digital literacy is crucial in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Abiodun also stressed that teachers should not depend solely on their past experiences to educate their students. “Teachers are not expected to rely on what they know from years ago to teach their students. They should ensure they brace up and be modern in teaching techniques,” he asserted, urging educators to adopt innovative approaches in their instruction.
In addition to urging teachers to seek online training, Abiodun called on governments and education stakeholders to prioritize ongoing professional development. He believes that consistent training is essential for improving the overall quality of education in the country.
