The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is set to honour World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala with an honorary Doctor of Science degree during its 55th convocation ceremony.
The week-long event will see 16,409 students graduate, beginning with a Juma’at service on January 10 and concluding on January 17.
Vice-Chancellor Folasade Ogunsola, speaking at a pre-convocation briefing, revealed that former Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola will chair the occasion. Tayo Aduloju, CEO of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group, will deliver the convocation lecture.
Ogunsola highlighted the recognition of three distinguished individuals for their contributions to academia and society. Alongside Okonjo-Iweala, Fola Adeola, co-founder of Guaranty Trust Bank, and Kolawole Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, will also receive honorary degrees.
The ceremony will include the conferment of various degrees, diplomas, and certificates across several faculties. “Out of the 16,409 graduates, 9,684 will receive first degrees and diplomas, 6,659 postgraduate degrees, and 66 from the UNILAG Business School,” Ogunsola said.
She detailed the results, noting 561 first-class degrees, 3,916 second-class upper degrees, and 763 second-class lower degrees. Additionally, 1,143 third-class degrees, 78 pass degrees, and 223 unclassified degrees will be awarded.
Ogunsola celebrated two standout students from the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, Damilare Adebakin and Samuel Badekale, for their achievements. Olamide Emida, the best-graduating student from the humanities, earned a CGPA of 4.95 in the Department of Accounting.
The overall best PhD thesis for 2025 will be awarded to Adetoun Alaba Akitoye, who obtained her PhD in Chemistry, while Eniola Ladipo will receive the best PhD thesis award in the humanities.
