1. The hint for creation of the University came during 1979 Nigeria general elections, when a gubernatorial candidate for Ondo State, Chief Michael Adekunke Ajasin made the university creation one of his campaign promises
2. It was established as Obafemi Awolowo University, Ado-Ekiti on 30 March 1982 by the administration of Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin.
3. The 1st matriculation ceremony was held on Friday 25th March, 1983 at the Assembly Hall, Ajitadidun Temporary Campus, Ado-Ekiti
4. The University started with 136 students spread across the Faculties of Arts, Science and Social Sciences.
5. The University Changed its name in June 1985 from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ado-Ekiti to Ondo State University, Ado-Ekiti under the State Military Government headed by Commodore M.B. Otiko
6. The motto of the University is “For Service and Integrity”
7. Prof. Ifedayo Olawale Oladapo became the first Vice Chancellor of the University in 1982.
